The second oldest city that we have ever been to!! This was a Roman city that dates earlier that the 16th century! It is a gem of a city!!! So much to offer and the history that pours from Trier is amazing.
Porta Nigra
Trier is one of the coolest German cities that we have visited. It has an old Roman Gate that is still intact! You can go inside and see the city from the top tower. The tower use to be gray sandstone, however, it started to turn black because of the air quality. Hence, why it is named Porta Nigra (Black Gate). The gate was built around 200AD!!!
Roman Amphitheater
They have a Roman Amphitheater that dates back to the 1st century! The Romans used it for gladiator flights. It was really neat to see from the top view but even cooler going below the "ring" and seeing where the gladiators were kept. Thankfully, they had a walkway that led around the underground part... It was cold, damp (as in partially flooded), and really creepy... I would NOT want to be trapped down there while the crowd was cheering for your blood.... You can almost envision the Romans sitting around on the grassy slopes waiting for the night gladiator fight to begin....
Imperial Roman Baths
We are standing in front of one of the largest remaining Roman Baths. This was pretty outstanding to see. This picture only shows a tiny bit of the Baths. It stretches well in front of us, with a grassy area for sports, and there is a whole underground Bath. For being built back in the 4th century, they were amazing in their building!!! Not only did they have hot baths, luke-warm baths, and cold water baths, but they had heated floors!! Pretty neat if you ask me!!
We've been to Trier twice now, and I bet if/when we go back we'll still find something there we haven't seen yet.
